Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I keep seeing the term "brainmap" or "brainmapping". What does this mean?
It is the term we use to refer to the pictures and graphs we get as a result of measuring the various brainwaves and amplitudes. During the initial session, we use the qEEG and sensors to take measurements of 19 different brain sites which are complied into a report that shows us the activity of each of the points we measured, as well as connectivity of various neural networks and deeper brain structures. This "brainmap" gives us a clear picture of what is occurring and helps provide direction for treatment during future sessions.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
As you may have guessed, that answer really depends upon the individual, the issue(s) being addressed, and the amount of time that the issue or issues have been present. During the course of treatment we use current updates of the brain map to measure progress, as well as subjective scores and answers from you regarding changes you have noticed, such as decreases in problem areas and increases in positive traits to help determine where you are and when treatments may be completed. The average course of treatment is often between 20 and 40 sessions.
Q. How is it possible for one modality to treat so many different issues? That sounds too good to be true.
That is the very first question that we had when we originally heard of this technology. The unfortunate truth is that when areas of the brain get out of balance and are under- or over-performing, numerous systems and functions are affected. The brain handles so many tasks and functions that each area can be responsible for a huge amount of functions. As the brain becomes more balanced through treatment, imbalances that cause symptoms are corrected and the symptoms can then be lessened or resolved.
Q. How is it possible to treat so many people with such different issues using the same method?
A treatment is individualized based on the information that is received from the initial map and at follow-up sessions involving data collection. The stimulation that each person receives has been based on that person's own brain map, as well as observations of their state.
Q. How long do the effects of neurofeedback last?
For the most part, when a person has gone through a course of treatment that has resulted in continuous gains and improvements, we can expect the results to be more permanent. We say for the most part because of a few exceptions; those being in the case of a recurrence of a traumatic issue or situation, or when a person decides to stop abruptly early in the course of treatments. It is not uncommon to feel and notice significant improvements early on, even after a few sessions, which can lead to the belief that issues are already "fixed. "
Q. Are there side effects?
No significant side effects have been observed so far. On occasion, a person may notice a slight, temporary increase of the symptoms that are already present, followed by a reduction or alleviation of issues. A small number of clients have also reported feeling tired or "spacey" after a session; this feeling is also temporary and is usually reported to have improved within a few hours.
Q. What are the costs invovled?
As of October 1st, 2021, an initial qEEG mapping is $150.00. Remapping sessions are $100.00, and treatment session are $85.00 per session. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT DIRECT BILL INSURANCE NOR CAN WE ACCEPT OHIP - PAYMENT IS DUE AT TIME OF SERVICE
